Live Blogging: Republican Presidential Debate 7

Posted by Reuben Ingber on June 6, 2007

  • Giuliani–Health Care–I love the way he continues to get up to talk to the audience directly–Free market principals will reduce costs and improve health care.
  • Thompson–Health Care–Tries to be like Giuliani and gets up to talk to the people directly, in my opinion he is unsuccessful
  • Romney–Health Care–Romney gets up to talk as well–The Democrats need to stop talking about it and tackle the issue.
  • Huckabee–Most pressing moral issue–stands up to answer as well–understanding the value of human life in the world–starts to talk about abortion and being pro-life on all levels from conception to when they are elderly living in nursing homes or children living in their parents cars.
    • The terrorists celebrate death, we celebrate life
  • Giuliani–Most pressing moral issue–We have great gifts in this country, in much the world people are not afforded these ideals. We need to bring these ideals to the people of the world–invokes Ronal Reagan again.
  • Paul–Most pressing moral issue–The acceptance of preemptive war–He fights back against other candidates comments on preemptive war on Iran.
  • Brownback–Most pressing moral issue–The life issue, I am pro-life–Our party has stood by that issue for years and we cannot nominate someone who is not pro-life–hit at Giuliani?
    • Blitzer brings up Giuliani–“I don’t think we can nominate someone who is not pro-life”
  • Romney–Why are you airing advertisements in spanish?–I am not anti-immigrant, and I want to reach out to legal immigrants and have them vote for me–Pretty open-ended response to the core of the question he talks about immigration reform but not why he supports English as a official language.

New format, time for questions from the audience!

  •  Hunter–How would you bring the conflict in Iraq to an end?–Thanks the men and women for their service–It is in our best interest to create a country that is not a state sponsor of terrorism, we need to leave Iraq in better condition then we left it.
  • Brownback–End in Iraq–We need to wait till we can leave the Iraqi’s to fight their own problems, speaks about his legislation for a three state-one country solution.
  • McCain–End in Iraq–“I’m going to give you a little straight talk”–Stands by the new strategy and commander–rejects the three state-one country solution–We can and need to succeed
  • Paul–How will we help to create a successful Iraqi government?–We should immediately leave and stop patrolling the street–No more Americans should die–Countries should want to immitate us not through the barrel of a gun.
  • Giuliani–Iraqi Government–Invokes his 9/11 record, stands up and talks directly to the members of the audience. We were successful in over throwing Saddam and now we must be successful to create an orderly Iraq–IraqStat=ComStat from NYC.

  • McCain–Evolution in school–“I believe g-d love us”–Curricula is up to the individual school districs.
  • Romney–Faith–Envokes Kennedy’s name–“I am an American running for President.”–Stands by his Church
  • Paul–Church vs. State–We don’t need more laws affecting religion, these are things left to the states or local levels–I always thought that their was a separation of Church and State.
  • Giuliani–Climate Change–We contribute to global warming, and there is a way to address it–We need a project similar to putting a man on the moon–bipartisan project.
  • Romney–GOP and Big Oil–Big Oil is making a lot of money now, these companies should be reinvesting profits in the companies. The oil companies are not the only profiting, but the countries who sell the oil are making the money.
  • McCain–GOP and Big Oil–These companies should be looking into creating nuclear power and other alternate energy sources. This is a national security issue–Can everything be linked to national security?
  • Paul–Our foreign policy is dictated by foreign oil.
  • Hunter–Gays in the Military–Would not change existing policy, it is already covered.
  • Giuliani–Gays in the Military–We should not be tackling this during a time of war.
  • Romney–Gays in the Military–The policy is working and this is not the time to have a social experiment in the middle of a war, we have bigger issues to talk about.
  • McCain–Gays in the Military–I think it would be a mistake to repoen the issue, it is working we should not tamper.
  • Gays in the Military–No one believes they should do so openly!

  • Brownback–Immigration reform–Immigrants should be using the existing system–I support the legislation.
  • Thompson–Immigration reform–Securing the border is the primary thing–their should be no amnesty and this is an amnesty bill.
  • I still don’t like the format, I miss the lights and bells!
  • Paul–Immigration reform/Canadian Border fence–I am opposed to amnesty
  • Gilmore–On Fred Thompson–His record as his conservative, does not really know what his record is.
  • Thompson–Is there a need for another Thompson?–Fred Thompson will be a great addition–He continues to stress his full name, Tommy Thompson,  fearful of confusion with Fred Thompson!
  • Giuliani–Microphone keeps going in and out–On abortion–He does not believe the government should be making the decision on abortion.

  • Tancredo–On immigration bill–“We are becoming a bilingual nation and that is not good”
  • Romney–On McCain’s accusation of flip flopping on immigration–Does not hit back at McCain, surprise

  • Giuliani–Immigration bill–It does not provide for a uniform database–On September 11, it took weeks to find out who should be in this country.
  • Romney–Immigrtation bill–think we should be enforcing the laws that already exist– the Z visa should be temporary not permanent.

Live Blogging: Republican Presidential Debate 1

Posted by Reuben Ingber on June 5, 2007

  • Blitzer again ask the candidates to give an introduction scentence.
  • Tommy Thompson takes a direct hit at Fred Tompson “I’m Thompson, the politician not the actor.”
  • Romney–Was it a mistake to enter Iraq?–He supports the Presidents decision based on the information we had. He brought up Harry Reids comments that we have lost the war in Iraq and said we have not lost the war when we have men and women in the field. We made mistaks following the fall of Saddam
  • Giuliani–Was it a mistake?–No hits the Democrats by talking about Irans threat being more realistic, then 10 years down the road
  • Brownback–Offers solution to Iraq issue, by establishing three individual countries based on religious sects–He says he is putting this up tomorrow, I can’t wait to read it–Reminds ome of a Korea type scenario.
  • McCain–If the surge has not improved the situation by September, what then?–Offers condolenses to families who have lost soldiers, as well McCain says we need to let this plan will take time to work. Takes a hit at Clinton by saying that “Nations loose wars” not Presidents, political parties, et cetera.
  • Thompson–If the surge has not improved the situation by September, what then?–The countries government should vote as to if we should stay or go. Have the individual provinces vote for the individual governments.
  • Paul–We are more threatened now by staying in Iraq–I don’t agree with that 100%
  • Huckabee–First reference of Ronald Reagan
  • Tancredo–If the surge does not work, the Iraqi government should be told if they want a republic then they should protect it–First reference to Benjamin Franklin–Random Reference!

CNN really loves the war in Iraq, as a topic. I agree its a big issue but their are others our next President should talk about.
