Pelosi to skip Military Briefing

Posted by informedstudents on April 25, 2007

Tonight, ABC News reported that Speaker Nancy Pelosi will skip a classified briefing tomorrow by General David Petraeus.

Its despicable that  Pelosi would consider missing this important briefing. If she wants to put America in a new direction isn’t it her responsibility to speak with the commanders on the ground. Whether or not she agrees with the plan, she has basically blind folded herself from learning about the problems in Iraq.

The House Republican Study Committee says

I hope that after a night of rest and reflection, the Speaker reconsiders this decision and shows General Petraeus, the men and women serving in our armed forces, and their families the respect that they deserve

I would have to agree

Democrats and Minimum Wage

Posted by informedstudents on April 24, 2007

The Hills Pundits Blog:

Why are Democrats attaching a completely unrelated minimum-wage provision into the Iraq war supplemental? What exactly does increasing the minimum wage have to do with providing our troops the money they need to protect themselves from Iraqi insurgents?

I have two answers: politics and partisanship.

First, the Democratic leadership is trying to trip up moderate Republicans who might want to vote to support an increase in the minimum wage but don’t want to surrender in Iraq. And since they know the president will veto this bill, they can get him on record vetoing a minimum-wage bill when he already said that he would sign one.

I can already see the 30-second ads in my mind. Congressman Joe Blow votes to increase his own pay but votes against increasing the pay of minimum-wage workers. We have seen this ad before, but it hasn’t been included in a war supplemental before. This is a new level of cynicism.

Second, partisanship. The new Democratic majority can’t put together the votes to pass a minimum-wage conference report or a wartime supplemental without resorting to these kinds of shenanigans because they have decided to go it alone. No input from any Republican. No effort to get Republican support. A new version of the majority of the majority.

We were promised something different when the Democrats retook the Congress for the first time in a decade. Instead, we get strange bills, where the minimum-wage increase, the top priority of the Democratic leadership, is slipped into the most controversial and arguably most important piece of legislation that this Congress will act on this year, the emergency supplemental that support our troops in wartime.

The Democrats should vote on the minimum wage separately. It shouldn’t be included in a supplemental.

I couldn’t agree more the Democrats are merely trying to make political moves to cripple the Republicans. Adding all the “pork” to the supplemental bill is wasting our time, and our tax dollars. If anyone is against minimum wage increase its the Democrats, cause they are in control and are playing party politics.

Congress v. Bush–The Gautlet

Posted by informedstudents on April 24, 2007

Late Monday lawmakers from the House and Senate finalized plans for the Iraq supplemental spending bill. The bill still still sets a date for withdrawal, and requires that to start in October and finish six months later.

I believe that congress is over stepping their bounds, they are not the “Commanders-in-Chief,” and they should respect the Presidents new plan and give it a chance to work. Meanwhile people must realize that if we leave Iraq, someone will be responsible to pick up the pieces, and most probably we will be leading a NATO or UN Force to fix the problems. I think Congress needs to allow the new  plan to work and wait to take action till its in full effect. The Democrats are merely looking for a way to win, they said they’d end the war and they have no way to do it successfully. (Pulling out doesn’t mean successs).

What do you think?

Great Britian withdraws troops from Iraq

Posted by informedstudents on February 21, 2007

This morning Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, announced that they will begin with drawing British troops from the southern region of Iraq.

I continue to support the war in Iraq, however as more of our allies begin to pull their troops out, we are no longer fighting a global war on terror but an American war on terror which makes no sense. When we went into Vietnam, we went with a strong coalition which shared the economic costs, life costs, and military costs, in fact the United States made money. The fact of the matter is though that this is not a war that can be solved through a two state division of Iraq, it must end with a “peaceful” and “stable” Iraq. If we cannot help the Iraqi government to accomplish that then there is no hope for peace and stability in the Middle East.
