Gates on Democratic “back-door effort” to end the war.

This weekend Defense Secretary Robert Gates “issued a warning shot,” saying that the Democratic proposal extend the time between deployment was a “back-door effort” to end the war. I could not agree more with Gates, the Democrats are afraid to do what they said they were going to do, end the war. They do not want to do it in a way that looks like they are not supporting our troops, for example stopping the flow of money to the troops for critical supplies. However this will do something similar, by not providing the needed man power on the ground. No where in the U.S. Constitution does it say Congress has the right to decide how wars are fought. I believe that if they really wanted to end the war, they would have done so already. Their drive to end the war is merely a rally cry for the American people. I support the Defense Secretary assertion that the President should veto any bill that proposes, this “back-door effort.”

How can you say that the Democrats are afraid to end the war by cutting off funding if that was one of their first moves when they gained control in January? How could they possibly push through war-ending legislation without control of both houses of Congress? They can’t, the Republicans in the Senate fillibuster legislation necessary for this country to end its heavy military involvement in Iraq. The Democrats are forced to commit to “back-door efforts” because it is the only way they can ensure the right policy is forwarded.

The Constitution may not give the Congress the authority to dictate how a war is fought, but it does give the Congress oversight responsibility. If the administration continues to follow a failed policy, then the Congress has an obligation to step in and change it.
